The horse that caused me to explore an even deeper level of connection is Mariza. Brought as a 3-year-old, she had a huge energy that couldn’t be contained in her small body. Very rarely were three or four of her hooves on the ground at the same time, she was either rearing or pawing the ground with vigor.
She could not stand still, and I couldn’t direct her at all with the halter and lead, she would rear and stag leap.
So I just walked with her, a long lead, no pressure to stop or go, just walk. Within a couple of weeks, she finally would have a very small release, lick, chew, yawn, or lower her head, I would stop and just touch her neck as close to her wither as possible, acknowledgement. As soon as she reared or started pawing, I just turned and walked again the opposite direction.
Eventually, she got interested in what I was doing and realized the rub on the wither was me acknowledging her, when she looked at something I touched her wither, when she licked and chewed I touched, when she lowered her neck and head even slightly I touched. This took a few weeks, and I wasn’t sure of the outcome, but she came through beautifully, and she would turn in any direction I looked. The connection was beautiful.
