Refined horsemanship, grounded in clarity, awareness and lived practice.
At Balance & Awareness, our in-person events are not demonstrations.
They are not quick fixes.
And they are not about drilling techniques.
They are immersive learning experiences designed to deepen the relationship between horse and human through clarity, presence, and refined communication.
Although traditionally called "clinics", I prefer to think of these gatherings as Immersion Workshops because they offer something much deeper than instruction alone. They are intentionally kept small, creating space for individual guidance, thoughtful observation, shared learning, and meaningful conversation.
An Immersion Workshop is a focused learning experience where:
• Riders receive individual guidance with their horse
• Observers (auditors) learn through guided insight and discussion
• Questions are welcome
• Refinement is personal
• Communication becomes conversation
Each day builds steadily - not through pressure, but through understanding.
We work from the inside out.
These workshops are for riders who:
• Want more than mechanical instruction
• Seek a deeper understanding
• Value thoughtful horsemanship
• Are ready to refine their communication
• Want their horse to feel heard
From Groundwork to In-Hand Work to Riding, these Immersions create space for meaningful development.

What We Focus On
Every Immersion is grounded in:
• Soft, responsive communication
• Developing awareness in horse and rider
• Listening to subtle signals
• Balance in body, mind, and intention and spirit
• Confidence built through clarity
• A shared language between horse and human
This work is not about dominance.
It is not about force.
And it is not about memorising disconnected techniques.
You will learn clear, practical skills grounded in awareness, timing, and thoughtful tool use - so that technique supports feel, rather than replacing it.
Ultimately, the goal is to develop feel and know what to do with it.
A typical day at an Immersion unfolds at a thoughtful, steady pace.
Riders work individually with their horses while others observe, listen, and learn alongside them. Each horse brings a different conversation, and each interaction offers insight for everyone present.
Between sessions, we pause to reflect, ask questions, and explore the ideas behind the work, because understanding why something works is just as important as seeing how it works.
Observers are not passive spectators.
They are part of the learning environment.
Often, the moment that clarifies something for one rider opens understanding for many others watching.
Throughout the day, we also explore off-horse awareness exercises, helping riders develop timing, feel, and clarity in their own bodies, the foundation of meaningful communication with the horse.
The atmosphere is thoughtful, supportive, and focused.
There is space to ask questions, to observe carefully, and to let understanding deepen.
Because when we slow down enough to truly see what the horse is telling us, the work becomes clearer, and the partnership begins to change.
This is not about watching someone train a horse.
It is about learning to see the conversation that is already happening.
Riders often leave with:
• Clear direction
• Greater confidence
• A calmer, more responsive horse
• Refined timing and feel
• A renewed sense of partnership
When communication turns into conversation, something shifts.

Rider Participant
Works individually with their horse throughout the Immersion.

• Individual guidance during the workshop
• Participation in all discussions and exercises
• Preparation materials where applicable
• Follow-up resources and continued access where provided
This option is ideal for riders wanting direct support in developing clarity, feel, and communication with their horse.
Ground Participant
Participates fully in the Immersion experience without bringing a horse.
Includes:
• Participation in discussions and learning sessions
• Off-horse awareness exercises
• Observation of all horse-and-rider sessions
• Preparation materials depending on the Immersion
Ground Participants often gain profound insight by observing multiple horses and riders as they develop their own awareness and understanding of the work.

Aggressive Young Horse Transforms with Owner into a Happy, Confident Team
I have been attending private clinics with Lynley for the past 2 years. I arrived with a new, young horse with quite a few issues and who was at times very aggressive. Having not ridden for a few years, I was out of my depth.
We are now a happy, confident team and every day I am excited to work with my horse.
She is an incredible teacher and coach, creating space (for) your awareness and observation skills to really develop, to really see your horse and empowering you to find ways to help your horse and deepen your partnership.
Lynley is kind, calm, intuitive and incredibly knowledgeable. She has given me the confidence and skills to trust myself. I’m now so excited about my horse journey, I only wish I’d found her earlier.

A Hormanship Journey of Self-discovery and Growth
Lynley is hands down the best instructor I have ever learned from. She has this great ability to work with what is in front of her, no matter what the level, ability, age or discipline.
I love how she puts the horse first, and teaches us about communication, connection and awareness with our horses AND ourselves! I have learnt a lot about exercises to help my horse become more supple, relaxed and responsive.
This is a continuous, exciting journey and I always look forward to my lessons with Lynley.
She is always positive, has a great sense of humour, and has this innate ability to know how far to extend me and my horses so that we continue to grow. This also encourages self-reflection and searching for answers within myself which is such an important part of this journey.
If you get the chance to do a camp at Lynley’s place in the Wairarapa, go for it!! It’s a great way to have concentrated time with your horse with great people and a beautiful farm.
Lynley you rock!!
